Hippo

Hippo

Hippo live in the protected landscape behind Cape Vidal, sharing the grasslands, forest and water of the Eastern Shores with buffalo, kudu and reedbuck.

They are also the stars of the estuary boat cruises at St Lucia, where they share the water with crocodiles, and where the odd hippo wanders the town's streets after dark.

When and where to see them

Watch the pans and waterways from the loop roads, and consider an estuary boat cruise at St Lucia on your way in or out. Keep your distance, stay in the vehicle and be back inside the gate before it closes.
